Submission in Marriage
Ephesians 5:22 5:23 5:24 |
Continuing from 'Oneness in Marriage', exactly how do we submit to each other? The wife should submit like she is submitting to God Himself. Why? Because God puts the husband between Himself and the woman saying that the husband is the "Head" and the two together "husband & wife" make up the rest of the body giving the perfect example of Christ and the "Church called the Body of Christ". Christ is the head and we (the Church) are His body. So as the Church, which is His body, is (supposed to be) under the direction of the head of the body so is the wife/marriage to be under the direction of the husband. |
Ephesians 5:25 5:28-29 |
But along with this position come tremendous responsibility for the husband to fulfill in an act of submission to the marriage. Just as the body’s brain will not force an arm or any part of the body to harm itself and will instead nourish and cleanse and medicate the body so should the husband love, nourish and cherish her and be willing to give his life for her protection and the protection of the marriage, just as Christ gave His life for His body. And how is this done? Back to verse 5:26 |
Ephesians 5:26 5:27 |
The husband is to learn the needs of his wife just as the brain, through the nerves, learns and submits to the needs of the rest of the body – whether it is hungry, if it hurts, if it is cold or hot, etc. Then he responds to those needs through his knowledge of the Word “ that he might sanctify and cleanse it (the husband and wife unity) with the washing of water by the Word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” |
Ephesians 5:33 |
In summary: “nevertheless let everyone of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband”. |
